I was behind someone the other day (some bimbo no doubt) who would not indicate at all the junctions and roundabouts that we passed. When the road changed to 40mph a couple of times she would not speed up to match either and just stayed at 30mph. Funny how the only thing she did notice on the road was the Gatso speed camera where she dropped down to 20mph to pass.

These are the worst kind of people on the road.

Driving slow so that you hold others up is considered poor driving and a driving test fail.

I'm not sure that what happens on a driving test is necessarily that informative.

Clearly we'd want people passing their tests to be confident in driving at the speed limit. (Even then, if your test took place in torrential rain, or snow, then the Driving Examiner would want to see a sensible choice of speed and driving style for the conditions).

When they actually drive on the open roads, paying for their own fuel and brake pads, they may exercise their own judgement about a suitable speed taking all of the circumstances into account.

I thought there was an underlying issue here, its the Free car club versus the MSE motorists. One group thrashes "their" car and ingnores wear and tear and fuel burn and the other group looks after their car and drives economically. I suppose there is a third group who have more money than sense.

Same as a tractor on a country road, pull over and let the queue pass. Same for caravans on hilly roads, if you arent in a rush then you can stop in for a minute at some shops

Way to go - how to completely twist a statement to answer what was NOT meant. :D

To make it clear I'll requote it and tweak it slightly.

I'm not twisting anything. I'm responding to what the poster stated.

Your tweak doesn't really help either. If I'm in a 30 mph limit, doing 30 mph according to my speedometer, then I'm likely doing 25 mph in reality. Does that make me a poor driver? I'll certainly be holding people up.

I often wonder just how far above the limit I'd have to go before cars stop tearing up behind me, i.e. before I stop holding people up. If someone drives slightly below the speed limit, they're lambasted, yet breaking the limit seems to be fair game.

That's the thing with overtaking. If it's not safe, and you expect the car in front to alter speed to let you pass, or in my case not accelerate when I enter a NSL zone, because he can't actually manage the overtake on his own, I wouldn't think it's discourteous by me. It's discourteous, and stupid on his part though, as only a complete idiot wouldn't expect a vehicle to accelerate when they pass into a NSL. His "right to overtake regardless of any other road user" isn't my problem, and I'll happily do the same again. If he decided to wait, and see what I did when I got to the NSL zone, then make an intelligent decision, fine. Trying to nip out a few yards early, and claiming, "I'm overtaking, everyone has to move out of my way, it's in the highway code" won't be a winner.

This describes selfish behaviour on the part of the guy behind you, and yourself. Indeed, you say it yourself 'isn't my problem'.
Remember that you started this by saying that you were driving AT OR NEAR the speed limit. If you're still arguing along that line, and you're maybe not AT the speed limit, you've got someone behind you who LEGITIMATELY wants to go faster. Slamming the gas as soon as you hit the NSL sign, in this case, IS being discourteous to him in his slow car, because you've been holding him up, unless you've been sticking to the speed limit.
Your SPEED is saying you're not in a rush but your ACCELERATION says you are. EITHER of these are fine, but BOTH are not. In this unique case, you really should just be courteous and let the guy pass, IMO. What harm does it cause you to accelerate more gently and have him in front of you?
And let's put the shoe on the other foot. Suppose you're following some in <insert car faster than yours> doing 36mph. You want to overtake. You pass the NSL sign, you pull out and accelerate at full whack. He also accelerates and leaves you out there, to fall back in. How do YOU feel?

Have another read at what you quoted. You'll fail your driving test if you keep breaking the speed limit! Holding people up, UNDER the speed limit WITHOUT a good reason, could be considered selfish. Just like a tractor if the speed gap, and the queue behind you is big enough. The courteous thing to do would be to speed up or pull over. No shame in either.

You clearly haven't read the post properly. If he had waited, as you describe above, until he got to the NSL sign, he would already have observed me accelerate. However, if he decided to illegally attempt an overtake by speeding in the end of the lower limit, I am not going to be slowed down by every poor driver behind me. How would I feel if I ever attempted such a clearly dumb and poor piece of driving? Ashamed.

Hahahaha ... read what you said.
... but you're happy to hold him up though?

Don't really give a sh*t either way about him tbh. (Congrats on the reading though)

Just plain discourteous and selfish then.
