Fine if your on a multi-lane road, but if your on a single-carriageway, or more horrifically, on a single-track, you need to be very aware of the other traffic and get out of its way.
Incidentally, where are all these polite notices in Scotland asking slower drivers to pull over? Certainly single tracks have them, but I don't recall seeing any on any A road.
    2 I know of on the A96.

When I took my motorbike test, the guy before me failed for doing 40 on NSL road. Failed to make progress - major fault - failed.

When I used to live in the country, the cops used to regularly pull over tractors if they had an excessive queue of traffic behind them and give them points. They were told, if they can only drive slowly, they need an orange flashing light, and have to regularly pull over to lets the build up of traffic pass.

So, fine, if you only want to drive slowly, please stick a yellow flashing light on your roof to warn the rest of us!

i'm with pinkteapot and themotorguy here

yes, i do let ppl overtake me where possible- infact, i would rather they would .

however, i do think ppl are quick to assume that it is *my* driving skills or lack of confidence that is an issue, rather than *their* lack of patience.

driving slower and more steadily, means less accidents, clearer mind, less stress, less likely to run over an animal, longer life brakes, better for your car, less fuel used.

Driving at 55 on a motorway (which you stated you sometimes do) does not equal less accidents. You're creating a hundred unnecessary flash points every time a lorry has to move out to pass you.

Sorry but at best you're not a competent, confident driver and at worst you're just plain thoughtless.

And add to that, the amount of times a lorry has nearly hit me side on by not looking before moving into the fast lane to overtake something slower than them. I would never follow a lorry, as said above, they are more likely to be distracted/tired than the cars doing the limit.

Do me one favour OP when on motorways and dual carriageways please drive at speed equal to or slightly greater than 56 mph then we won't have the mobile chicanes that are lorries which will be overtaking you (slowly) holding everyone up.

A true 56mph could be as much as 61ish mph on your speedo.

If you do that you won't get much complaint from me.

If you're "failing to make adequate progress" even without other traffic around, then it can really only be your own driving that is "the issue".
driving slower and more steadily, means less accidents

Not necessarily - if it incites others to overtake inappropriately, then it can be a cause of collisions.
    clearer mind, less stress

If you find driving at normal speeds stressful and difficult mentally, then - again - that it your own issue alone.
less likely to run over an animal

The one and only animal I've ever "run over" was a neighbour's chicken recently. At about 20mph, in an NSL. Since it wasn't laying, they actually thanked me...
longer life brakes, better for your car, less fuel used.

You seem to be conflating "smoothly" with "slowly". It's possible to drive quickly and smoothly, just as it's possible to drive slowly and jerkily. IME, those who drive more slowly than average are often less smooth, too. In addition, if your lower speed means you're a gear lower, then you're probably using more fuel rather than less.

I love how the family put in an official complaint for being proved wrong. This is the kind of crap I have to put up with at work.

    Idiots.

Driving slowly is fine - when conditions dictate. Driving slowly because you want to is just a pain in the **** for everyone else on the road. If there is a queue of traffic building up behind you then you are traveling to slowly so either pull over and let traffic past or speed up.
