Apparently that was only the practice run. Real DoE happening next month. We were somewhat caught out with this one as we got the equipment list late and both hubby and I were away from home that week. I'd like to help her be better prepared and less wet and miserable next month. DD4 borrowed her granma's Salomon trail walkers, which were brand new
She also borrowed my Regatta waterproof jacket, and we bought her Karrimor waterproof trousers as the waterproofs the school gave her were about 10 sizes 2 big. She already had the thermals and fleeces from skiing, so although she said she was warm enough she just got wet an stayed wet!
Can anyone recommend boots and jacket for next month as we obviously need to invest in better gear. She also said the girl she shared a tent with had waterproof socks! Never knew such a thing existed but they sound great!:rotfl:
:wall: <shakes head in despair at how some groups run their DofE> :wall:
She needs BOOTS not shoes - ones with ankle support! I honestly cannot believe that the supervisor let her go out on a Silver practice without BOOTS! She needs ones that fit well & especially if she intends to go on to Gold. I honestly recommend Cotswold for boot fitting - they really know what they are doing, but they aren't the cheapest, having said that, they have some good deals on at the moment! here
These from GoOutdoors are quite popular too - not the best quality but better than many of the fabric ones!
As for "wet for 3 days" - Was she wet from rain getting in (didn't put her coat on soon enough? coat leaked?) or from sweat (coat was clammy & damp on inside, clothes felt damp?)
For a practice, there really was no need at all for her to spend 3 days wet - the supervisor should have intervened and sorted her out!
Happy to help if I can ...

Thanks for all the feedback goggle, it helps!
I dropped DD4 off at a very good local shop 'All Terrain', recommended by other previous DoE students. The staff there fitted her out with proper boots, waterproof jacket, rucksack cover and sealskin waterproof socks. I almost fainted when I got the bill, but it's well worth it. To be more in keeping with whole DoE thing, I also let her shop for her own food. She based a lot of her decisions on her previous trip but I was impressed by how much she learnt the value of light, calorie laden food in favor of frivolous stuff she packed before! Hopefully she'll have better weather this Wednesday. No buying unnecessary toiletries 2014. Epiphany on 4/4/14 - went into shop to buy 2 items, walked out with 17!0 -
Just an update for those who are interested/gave helpful advice (thanks!)
DD4 returned yesterday. Exhausted, dirty, sunburnt (despite the sunblock she packed) but proud and happy and full of stories. Apparently supervisor said they did really well, and DD4 was leading the way a lot of the time. She's already said she wants to try for gold.
Many, many thanks for all the advice and input.;)No buying unnecessary toiletries 2014. Epiphany on 4/4/14 - went into shop to buy 2 items, walked out with 17!0 -
Well done that girl!!! and her Mum too for encouraging, helping and supporting her in her efforts, D oe E is such a wonderful opportunity for young folk to get to know thier strengths but it's not an easy thing to tackle, so hats off to the pair of you, be proud of yourselves, Lyn xxx.0

Unfortunately 9bars are not vegan as they all contain honey. Shame as I used to love them before I went vegan.
