Best place to buy a 1m WD my passport cable?

Hi folks,

Hi folks, I have installed a USB 3 PC card in my computer and will use it a lot with a WD my passport drive I have bought. The cable is very short and I need it to be about 1m I think

The expansion card came with a blue extension USB cable that I plugged the portable drive cable into, but the speed was terrible and seemed to get stuck after a while transferring no data.

Anyways after a bit of troubleshooting I plugged directly into the card with the short WD my passport cable and its flying along now at over 100mb per sec transfer rate.

There are lots of longer cables on ebay I know, just wondering if you have bought one that has worked well and where from?

another little thing the speed is no where as good with a Seagate expansion drive that is probably five years old, maybe 35 mb per sec Is there a reason for this or is the Seagate not able to take full advantage of usb 3?

Many thanks for your assistance.

Cheap ones will be cheap for a reason, Poor quality wiring.

But on the other hand paying a lot of money for a gold one is probably a waste.

Go for something mid range from a known UK supplier and see how you go.

    Supermarkets, Maplins etc etc.

Best buy does not exist in the UK.

    Maplins
I'm touched by your faith - from what I've seen a lotof the stuff sold in Maplin is 100% identical to the stuff on eBay. Apart, that is, from the price.

I've bought dozens of cables of all types on eBay, often at 99p delivered, and never yet had a duff one. If you can afford to wait a few days then the answer to any "where should I get xyz cable?" is usually eBay.

Thanks for replies. I really appreciate it.

As regards slower transfer speed (around 36mb per sec) to the old Seagate expansion drive, about five years old, compared to 100mb per sec for the WD my passport, is this likely because the Seagate is only set up to use USB 2?

    thanks

Yes and this will be confirmed by the fact that your old Seagate drive uses USB2 type connectors and is therefore not compatible with the later, faster USB3 standard.

    Thank you.

Since the my passport cable is 18 inches long and a little on the short side, just wondering would a 1m cable reduce the transfer speed much I wonder?

    Cheers.

So long as the cable has no fault it will not have any effect on the speed that you could measure.

I'd be inclined to buy the full cable rather than an extension as was linked to earlier - I wouldn't trust the joint enough but that's probably over cautious.
