do you currently have a gas supply at all or will a pipe need to be run from the nearest mains ?

If you have a current supply then you may be able to get a meter attached free of charge. If not then yyou will have to pay for the connection to the mains and it will probably not be cheap.

You can ask any gas supplier to supply you. If they agree, there is normally no charge for the meter.

Follow this advice to choose the cheapest supplier for you :)
    http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/utilities/you-switch-gas-electricity

Who did you contract to carry out the excavation, connection, pipework, meter enclosure box, etc? ( A charge is made for this work)

If National Grid did this, then any gas supplier should be able to supply you.

However if you took the often cheaper option of using an Independent Gas Transporter, then many smaller (and often cheaper) suppliers may refuse to supply you or charge an additional fee.
(The Big 6 will all supply you either at no additional charge or for a very small surcharge, e.g. £10 a year)

Some suppliers will happily co-ordinate the whole thing for you
e.g. British Gas, Scottish Power (as you suggested) etc.

If you follow this approach, you can, of course, switch supplier as soon as you are up & running :)

Thanks for the replies and the link.
We have got the supply to the building arranged through Scottish Gas Connection, they are the equivalent to Nation Grid, but for Scotland.

yes, probably best to pick one and change later.

Another issue is th at the leccy is key meter, so may e need to see about changeing that too? Its in a rental flat though. Complications there? We own it and rent it out.

No problem if the electricity account is currently in your name. (e.g. because of current renovation work)

Or if the property is currently tenanted and the electricity account is in the tenant's name, then it will obviously for the tenant to decide.

Most suppliers will make a charge (about £50) for such non-essential change of meter, if they agree to provide a credit meter.

Edit: if the property is currently tenanted and the electricity account is in the name of the tenant, shouldn't the gas account be likewise? In which case the tenant should choose the supplier and contact them accordingly for a meter to be installed.

Mm! Awkward, the new supply etc is in our name so I think we need to ask for the gas meter, then transfer the name to the tennant.

The account would be able togo straight to the tenant, but if rental I would be installing a pre-pay.
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

I'm sorry, but that makes no sense at all to me.

You started this thread saying it was a brand new connection and asking how to choose a supplier.

Now you say you already have a supply account for gas to the property (which half way through the thread you introduce the fact it is rented/tenanted) in your name.

I'll bow out from this point, sorry.

sorry, my error in explaining, I mean that the application for the new supply of actual pipework is in our name, all the paperwork, that doesnt mean I havegas supplier yet. So I will need to take the next step ourselves which is get a supplier, in our name then transfer to tenant
ta for help so far, my brain is still foggy since radiotherapy
