DVD has periods of no sound and plays twice as fast

I don't normally buy DVDs but treated myself to one. Played it and gave up after 12 mins as three periods of where the playback speed increases to about double and there is no audio. The periods last 50 secs - 1.5 mins real time.
I will get the DVD exchanged as I tried two more DVDs and its fine.
Anyone heard of the problem before?
