Hello!
I'm starting this year as a EU student studying in London.
I'm looking for options to finance my living costs during my studies and wanted to ask you about what possibilities there would be?
Are there any grants for EU students or would I need to get a loan from a bank in the uk? If so, could you name me please banks that offers loans for students which doesn't require a income.
thank you for your help!
best wishes
Rene

Dear Rene,
Assuming you are taking an approved course, you can apply to Student Finance England for a tuition fee loan. Unless you are eligible for any support offered by your future university (check the finance pages of their website), then that is it, unless you have already been living in the UK for at least three years. If that is the case then you are eligible for maintenance loans and grants based on your parent's income (or your own if you have been financially independent for a certain number of years).
You are extremely unlikely to be able to get a loan from a UK bank without any income or presumably a UK credit history. If you haven't done so already, you should though check whether the student support available in your home country can be used abroad. I have taught students from some, mainly Northern European countries, who were able to get some support from their home countries to study in the UK.0 -
The above is slightly true.
What was your main reason for coming to the UK? Was it to study?0 -
Hello!
Thank you for your both answers!
I'll study at University of the Arts London - Central Saint Martins, where I should get a tuition fee loan yes.
I have not lived in the UK so far and will move in June the first time there. I'm from Austria, where studying is almost for free, therefore there aren't many student supports really. At the moment I'm trying to get a loan from a local bank here though.
My main reason why coming to the UK is on one hand to study at my chosen university, but also I have developed a personal affinity with the place, therefore I most likely will stay in the UK after graduating.
best

It'll be a tuition fee loan only then. You'll need to find finance, either from employment or from Austria, for living costs.0

Studying may be free but you still have living costs there, no different to here, so I'm surprised that you have not considered thatI'm from Austria, where studying is almost for free, therefore there aren't many student supports really. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Hello!
It seems it's not really possible to get a loan from a bank as a student in Austria.
Does anybody know where I could apply for grants? Institutions or organizations that support students in art and design fields.
Thank you!0 -
As !!!!!! has said, how would you have financed living costs if you had remained in Austria to study? Why can't you use the same finance to cover costs in London (OK, I know it'll probably be more expensive in London, but it would be a start).0
-
In Austria you can have student flats for 350 euro per month (around 280 pounds). The studying culture in Austria is in general bit different as students rather tend to postpone exams and graduation. To say generalized, there are of course some others too. But therefore they would have time to job and earn their money, if they don't live at home and haven't really to pay for living.
In London I pay the double for a room, instead a flat and have a tougher schedule at uni.
Knowing this doesn't bring me further to solve my problem unfortunately

One alternative may be to postpone your study, live and work in the UK for long enough to meet the SLC residence requirements (not sure how long that is), and apply then for the course and loans.0
-
The course I have applied for had 3500 applicants of which 50 were accepted, therefore I don't think that postponing studying is a alternative.0
