Anyone seen any supermarket bedding plants?

Whereas I normally enjoy raising my own plants, this year is going to have to be a buying bedding one, sadly, because of time pressure.

I'll be quite happy to get mine from supermarkets but want to avoid the prices charged by e.g. Homebase, let alone the fancier garden centres.

The only problem is I haven't seen any appearing in my local Tesco, despite keeping an eye open for them.

Anyone seen any good value bedding coming up in any of the stores?

  • Morrisons had geraniums, begonias and possibly marigolds in packs of 6 for £2 or 2 packs for £3 and they were good value. This was a couple of weeks ago though so not sure if they are still in stock

not in supermarkets, no, but just about every weekend day from about lunchtime in our local B&Q (which has a large garden centre part) they move their slightly-sad looking plug bedding plants to the clearance stands - mostly they then mark them down to 20p for a tray :D. So far this year i've had -
    pansies
    alpine daisies
    petunias
    begonias
    bacopa
    geraniums
    mimulas
    lobelia
    verbena
i've also picked up cape daisies and bacopa in small pots for 10p each, and a lovely big well-established pieris japonica for £1.50 (down from £6, absolutely nothing wrong with it whatsoever).

Homebase sometimes have clearance bedding plants, this weekend I got 12-plant packs of upright and trailing lobelia for £1 a pack.

And remember your local greengrocer too - mine is also a florist, and they sell bedding plants - on Saturday I got a tray of alyssum for £1 too.

I'm with Balletshoes I find reduced priced plants in B&Q or even buy their smart price ones for my hanging baskets and they have been great. Wilkinson's always seem dead in my local branch and not reduced!

Thanks for the replies. Truly, I'm mystified why Tesco hasn't got in on the act as they usually do by this time each year.

A week or so ago I bought 20 really fine quality petunias for £3 from Tesco, of all places!

I wouldn't normally buy from a supermarket because if the way the plants are treated but there are exceptions (usually when they are recently delivered) and this was certainly one of them.

Oh, and I should add that Morrisons today had some good, sturdy pinks - not plug plants - for just £1.33 each and they were big, strong examples of named varieties - traditional favourites like Doris and Hay Tor.

I usually buy from Morrison's but have been disappointed by their selection this year. Did manage to buy a couple of boxes of geraniums but that was about it on the bedding front.

The larger Asda stores have them in :) my local one had quite a lot the other day but they were priced similar to B&Q if I'm honest.

You could look at the B&Q easy grow plants too. They're 4 for 10 pounds..each with 10 plants. So 40 for 10 pounds. When I went the other day they had a lot of them in their reduced section. x
