I provided a correct readings (no over / under readings to gain an advantage) to Scotish Power. They passed them to EDF old supplier.

EDF disregarded these readings which resulted in EDF gaining income of over £200 that Scotish Power would have eventually billed.

With gas Scotish Power is a cheaper unit rate, but a higher standing charge, so I was overcharged by around £25.00

Went through complaints procedure all way to ombudsman who decided on EDF paying me the £25 plus a further £25 for the 6 months it took to come to a conclusion.

Ombudsman did confirm that old supplier does not have to accept the reading they receive if their anticipated consumption for you is outside the parameters they calculate.

A quick update on my switching woes (as a respondee to this thread, not the op).. After receiving a second bill showing 50 units added on to the final reading, despite being assured the account was on hold, and a new bill would be issued - i called again, and after a long wait for a callback from Npower's complaint department phone queue got through in less than an hour !

The lovely lady i spoke to (and i sincerely mean that, she was pleasant, and it felt she was trying her best, unlike many i have spoken to there) - re-checked the changover meter reading on a "shared database" she called "DTS" which apparently both providers agree on !?!? - she confirmed the correct reading should be 50 units lower than i've been billed for by Npower, and is arranging for me to recieve a correct final bill!

Unfortunatly she then tried to cancel the previous bill, and arrange the correct bill to be issued whilst i was on the phone - which resulted in "something which hasn't ever happened before" - and the new bill - being 50 units lower, showing as more expensive ! - someone will call me by the end of the week (I've been told) ! :/

I've only ever seen electricity bills calculated to the whole kWh.

If you have one that isn't, you should probably consider sticking it on ebay or summut - it's proabably worth a fortune just because of it's uniqueness. ;)

Here's a little extract from my bill

So, what's it worth on eBay??

I love your conspiracy theory. :)

It sounds so much more exciting than the reality, details of which I shall not bore you with presently

The Meter Reading Agency must validate the reading.

Why? In an attempt to avoid errors caused by incorrect customer readings.
Just another incompetent cog in the incompetent machine that is overseen by an incompetent regulator.
  • Hi,
I used the cheap energy club to switch to Scottish power, received 3 emails from them to let me know my switch was in process.
4 months later not a thing had happened. So I phoned and was told they had lost my application, would I care to go through the figures again. I declined. has any one else had this problem? are they trying to pull a fast one?.

    Hi Twinney

I'm sorry to hear about the problems you had following your switch application to Scottish Power. If you drop us an email to energyclub@moneysavingexpert.com, we'll look into this for you.

The saga continues. Despite the above estimate being incredibly close to reality, Scottish Power have decided to revise it, months after I switched away from them and have just stolen some pennies (<£1) from my bank account without the courtesy of any advance notice.
