Standing Order/DD

I signed up for a service by Standing Order...I now find it came out of my account as a Direct Debit....what's the score.

To set a DD the other side needs your sort code and account number. How do they know them then if you didn't give this information?

Standing Orders need to be set up by you on your bank account, to pay someone else. Is this what you did?

Or did you agree that the company can debit your account with their fee, and perhaps on a regular basis? If the money has come out of your account by DD, you will have a DD authorisation showing in your account. You can cancel this DD anytime you like, though you might still owe the company money, depending on what you signed up for.

It is you who sets a SO with your bank. I can be wrong, but it makes no sense to me to sign such form for a third party.

I filled out a SO form the agent had with details.....how does that make no sense?

Because you send the standing order form to your bank, not to the service provider.

If you submitted it to the service provider it sounds like you were agreeing to a direct debit instead.

Why would they need a SO form if they can set a DD, but can't set a SO?

EDIT: that said, I can imagine that they can send the SO form to your bank that will set the SO according to your instructions. If it really was a SO form and the money was taken by a DD, then you can cancel the DD and set a SO instead. Also, you can ask the bank to refund the money and to pay by other means if you wish.

You mean you have the soft copy of the form on your computer? Does it actually say Standing Order on it?

If it doesn't contain personal data, you could upload the form on tinypic.com and post a link to it so we can see what the form says.

Why not a hard copy, i.e. a paper one?
