JCP sanction timelengths

Would anyone know if the JCP - when a sanction is applied - has to inform the person of the timelength of the sanction please?

My younger son was sanctioned well over a month ago (it might even be 5-6 weeks now), supposedly for not applying for enough jobs.

He accepted that, in the sense that he hadn't seen enough that he could do or was eligible for.

But just over a week later he actually got his first (ever) interview and a few days later, the job that he had applied for.

The JCP have not informed him of the sanction timelength by any means, letter, verbally, etc, even though he's signed on twice since the sanction was applied and has asked.

He was also told to call a JCP number to either appeal the sanction or find out how long it would last. He's called the number literally dozens of times - each day every weekday - since he was told he was to be sanctioned, but it has been continually busy or unanswered.

Anyone any idea of the timelengths they apply, and if he should have been informed please?

He should have received a letter from a DWP decision maker, confirming that he's been sanctioned, why he was sanctioned, the length of time the sanction applies for, and how he can appeal (ask for a mandatory reconsideration of the decision). This is sent to all people who've been sanctioned. He's either misplaced it or it's been lost somewhere.

It's not for JCP to tell him, as they didn't actually sanction him. They merely referred him to a Decision Maker. That said when I was unfairly sanctioned (quickly overturned), and visited the Customer Service Manager at the Jobcentre, he checked whether they'd heard back from the DM and what the sanction was, if any. That was a bit different, though, as it was a manager and was a special appt I made to discuss some concerns with him.

He should have been told that he may be entitled to Hardship payments for some of the time he's sanctioned. This is a reduced form of JSA, effectively.

But I believe a sanction for a first "offence" is now 4 weeks in length. Was it his first offence?

Thanks. Yes, it was a first offence - he's not even been signing on that long tbh.

But thanks for advice and I'll follow it up for him. :)

So, in IDS' opinion (and some on DT) he's now definitely not applying for enough jobs. :)
If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5? :)

I'd even forgotten that just over two weeks before the sanction, he'd managed to get a weeks work experience with a company (he's fresh out of college) off his own bat.

Tbf to them, I appreciate some don't even try, but he was trying to find something - job/apprenticeship (some didn't even reply to him)/work experience, pretty much anything.

Sorry, just noticed your post. :o

I've had a few people do work experience for me, and I've always paid them for it. I wouldn't expect someone to work for nothing.

It depends on the level of sanction applied, there are three, Lower, Intermediate and Higher. For not completing work related activity, ie not applying for jobs, it is likely to be a Higher level sanction, which, for a first 'offence', is 13 weeks.

Not actively seeking employment is four weeks is a first offence.

Or at least it was when I was sanctioned in March (before successfully appealing).

I am writing to Martin Lewis to make it mandatory that all posts are supported by links giving the correct information..

Failure to do so will result in the poster being struck off from the forum for 4 weeks. If a second offence occurs then that person will be struck off for 13 weeks

    And so on.......................

Seriously, a quick google usually supplies the answer and saves misinformation being given.

I know people love the 'companionship' of the forum (as do I) but please try to check before you give information. Saves a lot of haasle.

    Grumpyboots.

So here is the link about sanctions:
