CAT D Mercedes SLK280

Hi all,

I'm looking at purchasing an 07 plate Mercedes SLK280 2d Tip Auto. 53k genuine miles, 3 owners.
It was written off and repaired as CAT D. Damage was to front bumper, Bonnet, lights etc. All have been replaced and looks like new. Radiator wasn't damaged neither the chassis. It drives and looks like new.
Book value is approx £10.5k at a dealer, 39k private.
Up for sale at £8.5k but got this down to £8k.

Does anybody have any recommendations or comments or previous experience on purchasing a CAT D car and does the price reflect a CAT D purchase?

My only reservations are when we come to sell (if we sell), will anybody else want it and at what value.

Any comments would be appreciated.

People will be like you are (1) slightly concerned (2) be able to get it at below book price. Of cause you've got it at under book price so number 2 is pretty much negated.

    I think its too expensive.

From autotrader £9.5-£10K would pick one up from a dealers. £9K would pick one up privately.

To me the car would need to be around £7K.

As long as your happen with the price and have inspected it to find if that was
ALL the damage and its been repaired properly then you saved a bit of money.

Any issues with your insurer and Cat D vehicles?

Have you really though? You've bought something thats quantifiably worth less, for less money.

Come resale time it will be harder to sell and be worth proportionally less.

There's an awful lot to go wrong under that pointy nose and I wouldn't even look twice if the seller was pitching it at over £7,000.

Keep watching it till it hits £7,000 and offer low £6's.

Ask a bit more information about though, if the guy bought it damaged and repaired it to make some money or if its the same chap who owned before the accident.

It will hang around for a while yet.
