Carpet fitting stairs and landing quotes

We are having our stairs and landing re-carpeted.
The total area is 38.5 sq. yards and includes 2 stairways and 1 hallway.

We have been quoted £180 for the fitting, from a local independent firm, and I am unsure if this reasonable, as it cost £40 to get 2 large reception rooms carpeted by a national firm last year.? I expected it to be more for stairs but this seems quite a hike.

Also, if the underlay is already fitted should the quote be lower ( we have had quotes for with and without underlay but the fitting. Has remained the same price?

Please could anyone get back back to me with any views costs as quite confused and although happy with the carpets costs this is half the price again nearly!
Many thanks.

That's hella expensive. I paid £50 for my stairs and landing last month.

I have not yet ventured - but in the process of getting quotes for 2 bedrooms, a small office room.
Also thinking of replacing the floor boards - they squeak like hell..

Stairs due usually cost more to fit that rooms do. I wouldn't say your estimate is extraordinarily high as the average charge for carpet fitting is around the £4-£5 per sqr metre range. There are different levels of carpet fitters too, there is what you'd term your bog standard fitter & then there are Master carpet fitters.

Many independent shops do offer free fitting, so perhaps you could look for one local to you that offers this.

Have a look here if you need to find a properly registered carpet/floor fitter. If you type in your postcode it will give you the names of any in your area. http://www.nicfltd.org.uk/
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.
  • I would say that is extremely reasonable. That equates to under £4 sq/m for fitting stairs.
As for free fitting, there is no such thing. The price of the fitting will be included in the price of the carpet. No fitter is going to work unpaid.
To the person who said they paid £50, I'm sure the area involved was a lot less than 38.5 sq/yd, otherwise your fitter would be charging just over £1 sq/yd to fit it.
