Looking to reclaim PPI and I am very confused any help appreciated!

Hi

I got into a terrible mess with finances years back and for a while wouldn't even consider claiming ppi as it would mean revisiting it all! Since then I am all sorted and in control again phew:T

In a nutshell I had several cards that I know I had PPI on as I either thought I couldn't have the card without it or didn't know I had it.

I was in employment that meant I would receive sick pay and from what I gather this means that ppi wouldn't have kicked in anyway? In any case knowing more about it it is not a product I would have wanted as I always had bank of mum and dad to bail me out (shameful I know)

I just don't know where to start and the more I read the more confused I get.

I have done a credit check through equifax (which shows a glowing report ) on myself to identify cards, suppliers and dates.

It shows

barclaycard (formally egg) taken out in 2003 (small amount still on card)
Barclaycard taken out in 2004 settled
Barclaycard (formally egg) taken out in 2004 (small amount still owing)
MINT taken out in 2004 with some balance still on it
MBNA (I believe this was previously a Morgan Stanley but not sure) taken out in 2004 settled

I don't know the card numbers of my closed accounts.
I don't know who to go to for the cards that have changed supplier. Do I need to go through 2 places?
I don't know if I should call (what to say?) or write.
I was tempted to use a claims handler as it feels like a lot of work and very "bitty" but I knew they take a % and not sure it would be to my advantage.

So any guidance really appreciated, I keep reading the guide and other peoples posts but am just getting more and more confused.

That is an incorrect assumption. A lot of PPI will pay out in addition to employer sick pay benefits. However, a minority will not. If that minority applies to you then you have a valid reason. if it does not then you don't. It also depends on the quality of the employer sick pay. Some only pay for short periods. Others pay for a year.
In any case knowing more about it it is not a product I would have wanted as I always had bank of mum and dad to bail me out (shameful I know)

If you make a complaint with that reason then your parents will be asked to supply details of their finances to show they they could afford to do it and would be willing to do it. Generally, this is not accepted in most complaints.

They dont do anything other than send the form you complete in the post to the company. You are capable of posting your own form.

Fill in the form (one for each provider), give your reasons for complaint and post it to the providers. Think about your complaint reasons as they are not strong. However, find out your employer benefits in advance in case they are not as good (or could be better) than you think. Then you can complete the actual employer benefits and you will know they are right should they ask you to prove it.

    Thanks for the quick response!

Sorry to be so clueless what form do I fill in?

Also for the reason for claiming. I obviously want to pick the strongest but the nutshell is I didn't understand what it was, didn't know that I had it (how do I prove I didn't know? ) with egg I thought that my application would be declined did I not take it. I'm not sure how to phrase it.

    Thanks again!

    Do be aware that if your finances were "in a mess" back then and you had monies or interest written off as part of debt management plans etc then the Bank can offset any redress you may be awarded;

You need account numbers i.e. card numbers or loan account numbers. You could phone and ask but closed ones may not tell you what your account number was. If they don't, you need to send them a SAR and £10 [each company involved] to find out what info they have left.
