Hi folks
My computer running windows xp sp2 failed windows genuine advantage and now I am met with a black screen:
- no icons
- no start up menu
What I have left:
- black screen
- mouse curser
- task manager
My copy of XP is genuine but I have no idea what to do now. I know money saving expert isn't the best place for this type of information but if anyone can recommend another forum that would be really helpful.
Thanks!

Hi
It's a Compaq D51S/P226/14112/2I GR
Thanks.0 -
In the first instance, you can boot into Safe Mode with Command Prompt via F8, to enter:rundll32.exe syssetup,SetupOobeBnk
In the second instance...you need to update your install to SP3.0 -
I still have the black screen in safe mode - how do I run the above?
Thank you.0 -
safe mode WITH COMMAND PROMPT was the option you were instructed to choose......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
Oh sorry - managed to select the right one now unfortunately is says 'Missing Entry'0

Who said anything about buying a new PC?
If you can copy your data via the Task Manager, then you should get to it.
Did you enter the command exactly as written?
If no go...
Back up your data and run a clean install from boot, deleting and formatting the existing partition. Your updated recovery disc is in your PM Inbox. It has been there for some time.
SP3 was introduced six years ago. You are lucky to have got this far without mishap.0
