British Gas - Boiler

Just had a quote from British Gas to replace current back boiler system (2 loft tanks, 1 upstairs water tank and gas boiler - currently behind fireplace) with a single combi boiler.

Worcester 30Si - £1,159
Labour - £2,583
Hive - £474
5 year cover - £643
Power flush - £354
Sub Total - £5,214
F&F Discount - (£1,303)

Total £3,911

Thoughts. Seems high, but I think I'd rather pay British Gas £4k then pay an unknown £3k.

Also the boiler comes with 5 year warranty so not sure if the 5 year cover is worthwhile?

thanks
Just have a little faith

  • apart from the hive being £199 installed (they quoted you more) and i'm glad you have the FandF discount saved a few quid!!

British gas subcontract their installs to subcontractors. your extra £1000 will not buy you a better job.

Go for local companies with good reviews, or get recommendations from friends and family.

I have subcontracted for a national company alongside my own work. I have been out to quote on jobs for my company and for theirs. customer gave me a double take when i walked in again!!

As above says, we had MORE work done by a Gas Safe engineer with a better spec WB boiler for nearly half the price! Go local!

Way, way back in the day when I was young and enthusiastic and just bought my first house, we got central heating installed and we paid the extra to British Gas (in fact I'm not even sure we got any other quotes) precisely because we wanted the best possible service with the British Gas name and to not have to worry about it. It was worth the extra to us to have the peace of mind.

So when the "British Gas" guy came round and he wasn't actually BG at all but a sub-contractor, we were really disappointed because we realised right there that we could have saved money by going direct. But never mind, we thought, it's done now and anyway this guy is bound to be the best of the best otherwise he wouldn't be on their list.

Until the first time we turned the heating on, nothing worked and we could smell GAS. We were only young and nearly crapped ourselves not knowing what to do next. The emergency guys came round and stuck a big red notice on the whole thing saying it was unsafe. We'd paid all that money and there we were with no heating or hot water for (I seem to recall, although I might be wrong, it was 20 years ago) three days until they could get someone out to look at it. And they acted like as far as they were concerned they'd fully met all expectations by fixing it - never mind that it should never have happened in the first place.

So... fourthed. Get quotes from other Gas Safe registered people.

Although I'm perhaps not the best person to ask about getting competitive fees for stuff, but oh well. Can't hurt.

Can't stand British Gas and their underhand sales techniques, they are the Safestyle of the boiler industry.

Their engineer lied to me about the PCB in my boiler. And they don't turn up when arranged.

    Go local.

I wouldn't touch British gas with a bardge pole. Let alone pay them over the odds. We had a great local plumber do ours. Very happy. And much cheaper.

  • Dont pay an unknown. Look up on Bosch website for accredited installers in your area. Then check they are gas safe registered. Then get 2 more quotes. Save £2k and be happy.

That BG quote is a joke. Labour - £2.5k!! It is 1 days work for 2 people!!!!!!!!!!

Hive £474!!! It is £199 on their website!!:eek:

5 year cover £643:eek::eek::eek::eek: Worcester give a guarantee (parts and labour) for 5 years as standard! So they are charging you for something you get for free! https://www.worcester-bosch.co.uk/homeowner/boilers/gas-boilers/greenstar-30si

But, they have adverts on the telly, so they must be ok.
