car hire and credit card foreign transaction fees

I followed MSE advice for car hire and took out separate excess insurance so when I rented the car I was charged 900euros deposit on my credit card on my statement I was also charged a foreign transaction fee of 22gbp. When I got reimbersed for the deposit my bank charged another 20gbp for foreign transaction. That added 44GBP foreign transactions fees for credit card to the cost of my car hire -would it have been better to take out insurance with the hiring company instead?

Call your CC company and ask them to refund both charges.

Don't know about the insurance, but it's certainly better to use for foreign transactions a card that doesn't charge for currency conversion:
