Sainsburys Bank will not delete online login

A few months ago I closed the only savings account I had with Sainsbury's bank.

A house move has prompted me to make sure everything has my new address.

I was a bit surprised that I could still log into my Sansburys Bank login and change my postal address even though I had no accounts with them. So I phoned them and asked them to delete the login as I had no accounts with Sainsbury and no plans to open a new account, but they could not find any details of me on their system even though I was actually logged-in! They suggested I write in as someone in their back-office should be able to do it. So I wrote a letter including a screen shot showing that the login did exist, and asking them to delete it.

They replied that they could not delete my login, stating the obvious that it could only be used by someone who knew the password.

Am I the only one to think this is unacceptable?

If they leave the login permaneltly active, then I will still have to log into it on a regular basis to make sure that no-one has hacked in and changed the postal address, applied for new accounts etc.... And I'd have to remember to log in and change my postal address every time I moved house, even though I have no accounts and really want to sever all links with Sainsbury's Bank.

This seems like an unnecessary security risk as well as a burden for me.

It's also made me wonder how many other online banks keep logins active even when the customer closes all accounts with them.

In some cases it is a good thing to allow logins after all accounts are closed - in order to look at statements etc. It also makes things easier if you wish to open a new account at a later date. It does seem wrong to me that the login remains after you have requested that it be deleted.

Virgin Money retained login after all my accounts had been closed. I don't know if this was for a limited period as I did use it to open another account later.

A bungle of solution, I know, but you could consider trying to login with incorrect details to get your account automatically locked. That way there'd be less concern about somebody being able to log in, since they would also need to go through the rigmarole of trying to unlock the account.
This is everybody's fault but mine.
