Would you rather have separate Dining Room or Garage?

We have a garage but don't use it as we also have a driveway. However the garage is only big enough for a small modern car, our C4 Picasso won't fit in there - well it will but we'd be stuck inside the car if we tried! DH uses it to store his tools and any junk that I don't want in the house. So a garage wouldn't be essential to me if there was a drive for parking.0

We're looking at quite a few places which have garages and I think we would always want to convert a garage into extra reception space, and if size allows maybe also utility or a study space. But having a large reception space is quite important to us as we want to option to be able to host extended family a few times a year.
It may depend what your other storage options are, ie if you also have a cellar or unused loft I suppose.0 -
Def the extra room, inside the house.
But a drive is a must have for me.0 -
If you have off-street parking then I would convert a garage to an extra room, even if it wasn't a 'dining' room, there are lots of other uses! I would love room to be able to sew without having to put all the stuff away in between sewing sessions.
Every house I lived in which had a garage, never had a car in them! Plenty of junk, odd bits of wood, old boxes etc... what a waste!0 -
Dining rooms are so 1970s, are they?
Well, yes, in those days people really did have meals, sitting around a table, where they conversed, instead of watching TV or fiddling with an iphone. They even ate with their kids!
Can you imagine it?
In some cases, clearly not.:rotfl:0 -
I'd want a decent garage,
But 9 times out of 10 when the garage is built onto the side of the house it's to small. You may be able to get the car in the garage but you don't have enough room to open the car door when you're in there.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

I'd want to keep the garage.
An extra room just gets used up and filled with stuff, which then looks untidy. A garage you can use for the mower, tools, workbench, paint cans etc.
Unless I had a huuuuuge cellar (which I don't) I'd definitely want a garage over an extra room.0 -
As long as there was somewhere else to park the car (a driveway) then I would like the garage to be converted to additional house space yes.Proud to have lost over 3 stone (45 pounds,) in the past year! :j Now a size 14!
You're not singing anymore........ You're not singing any-more!

A few months ago a very young and new Estate Agent came to value my house. He said it wouldn't appeal to families as it's old fashioned. Why?
It has a separate dining room. Families want a kitchen-diner nowadays. News to me!
He also said the fairly large garden wouldn't appeal either-don't children play out nowadays?
That EA didn't get my custom.0 -
When we started looking for our first house my partner and I said that a garage was the top priority. The house we actually went for has no off street parking though! The reason being the house completely won us over, and especially the space. Yes it's convenient having a garage, but in terms of the percentage of your life you spend in one, compared to an actual living space like a dining room...you're better off having the latter.
For what it is worth though, we have an open kitchen diner but I'd prefer a separate room. I hate having to look at washing up to be done when i'm eating!0
