55 plate ford ka, gear problems

I have a 55 plate 1.3 fors ka. It was driving fine but my wife said on the way back from work she really struggled to get it in gear especialy down gears. I tool it out when she got home and you need to put some force in to changing gear. It is much easier when changing up than changing down. When i pumped the pedel it improves it but only for a short while. It also crunches when you put it in reverse. The clutch pedal needs to be pushed nearly all the way down to engage the clutch. I dont know much about cars and was wondering if it is eeither a drop in the hydrolic pressue which is cheaper to fix or if I need a new clutch? Also does anyone know what I can expect to pay for either of these things to be done. Thank you in advance for any help.

Could be either is it a hydraulic clutch on the KA?

    Check the fluid.

If its the master cylinder then thats easier. But if its the slave the gearbox needs to come off so you may as well change everything.

    Upto £400 ish.

  • Thanks. I have been told it is hydrolic clutch but like I said I really dont know much. How would I check the fluid as im sure if I take it to a garage they will just want to charge me for the most expensive thing whether it needs it or not. At least if I sound like i know what I'm talking about they may be kinder.

I doubt if it the clutch fluid level, as there is a sensor to monitor the level is sufficient. You can check the fluid in the reservoir shown circled in red, the correct level is marked with min - max lines:
