Phone call from someone "Representing Vodafone"

As background, my daughter's phone contract with Vodafone is about to expire, so she is due to get a new phone soon. This may be why my wife fell for this.
My wife got a phone call from number 02030020435 from someone claiming to represent Vodafone.
They said she could get a free phone, but would need bank details etc. to verify and do a credit check (they already knew my wife's full name).
Unfortunately, my wife gave them her bank details - she was then told that there would be a fee of £42 per month.
She told them she wasn't interested and hung up, but they phoned back.
I took the phone and asked them what their company name was and where they were calling from.
They eventually said they were Hello Mobile and were based in Fulham Road in London.
I said I wanted to ensure they understood that we weren't interested and that they shouldn't take any money from our account. The person I spoke to said "that's ok, we have an excellent banking system 'here'!".
Later in the conversation, I found they were calling from Egypt.
We immediately transferred all of the money from my wife's account into our joint account, because I don't trust these guys to not raid the account. My wife will speak to our bank today to see what else we can do.
He told me they phoned because my wife filled in a form online. I asked which web site and he said "I don't know - we have hundreds". Needless to say, my wife never filled in any such form.
Has anyone else been in this situation? I've researched this phone number online, and see the same story.

Had one a couple of weeks ago claiming to be t mobile, said as I was a loyal customer I could have a free phone and knew my name but wanted me to tell them what contract I was on, when I said that as they were t-mobile they should know they went all coy. . . . Funny thing is that they always know the names and they know which company you are with?0

If they have your number, they can usually guess which network you're with as unless you've moved operator, the number will come from a number group issued by one or another network -07094 coming from Orange for instance0

07094 is orange? I thought 070 was a premium rate number?
I wouldnt phone anyone with an 070 number.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
I presume that's a typo and 07904 was meant.
Interestingly, using a number search utility my number is registered as being a Vodaphone number from 2004 ... erm no - it's giffgaff from 2013.(Just shows how numbers are recycled.
