Does UFH reduce thermal mass then? I would've thought with the requisite floor insulation it would make it OK.

No it doesn't reduce thermal mass. But by running the UFH in the morning, before the sun rises, the floor slab's capacity to store heat from solar gain is taken up and the solar gain goes to waste.

    Run that by me again!

Any heat introduced into the property - including solar gain - will still be absorbed by the property; it will manifest itself in the floor slab losing heat at a lower rate.

Remember what Albert Einstein stated - you cannot destroy energy etc etc!

I think the First Law of Thermodynamics predates Einstein!

The question is whether the free energy from solar gain is more usefully used in raising the temperature of an unheated floor slab from 16º to 20º or taking a floor heated by ufh from 21º to 25º. In my view, the latter makes as much sense as heating an unoccupied room.

That might be what you meant - but not what you stated.

However I now understand your point!
