Motability

My husband is visually impaired, has a motobility car and I am his registered driver. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and because of this received a grant towards the advance payment. We received a letter a few months ago telling us that our 3 years are nearly up and we are due to change cars.
We have spent time looking into other cars, taking test drives etc.
My husband phoned the grants dept at motobility and we were told that they had decided to extend the contract by 2 years and when my husband said that our needs had changed, he was told there was nothing they could do.
We have another few months left, but they said we could get out of the contract sooner if we no longer wanted a car with them.
Are we able to appeal this decision?

I don't think you can appeal this decision other than to approach Motability again and restate your case that the vehicle you have does not suit your needs and explain why not. They're usually quite amenable where circumstances have changed but perhaps they suspect that it's only since they said they will extend the lease, rather than assist with a new purchase, that your needs have changed? Having said that, it is normal practice where users need assistance with the AP, that Motability extend the lease for a further two years as it's the cheapest method and they usually pursue the most cost effective route.
I guess the only other option is to ask them if they can assist you to find a vehicle that suits your needs and see what options they come up with. Perhaps they might be able to help you find a vehicle that suits you, with little or no AP?
I hope it gets sorted out for you anyway.

If your driving needs have changed you can phone motability and request an assessment at a disability driving assessment centre. They will contact one of these centres who will arrange an assessment (if you receive high mobility DLA it is free) on a date that suits you.
These centres are brilliant as they will tell you exactly what adaptions etc you need on your car. You will be able to drive one of their cars with the adaptions required for you to get a feel of it. They are so helpful and friendly.
Hope this helps.0 -
Have you had a look at the Motability web site as there are a lot of cars that need no AP or very small ones.???0
