Refunds In CEX and Membership

Hello,
This is sort of a general question but when returning any item to CEX for a refund you HAVE to make a membership with them including showing ID that they take details from (id number, card number etc), phone number and home address.
I am just wondering what the standing is if someone wanted a refund but refused to make a memership? What would be the customers and for that matter the shops rights?
Thanks guys

If not faulty they can put anything in their terms about refunds they want.
If faulty, they could probably do the same if you wanted to specifically request a refund OVER a replacement or repair, as you have no right to demand one remedy over another.0 -
If acceptance had not occurred then a customer could demand a refund under the Sale of Goods Act if the goods did not conform to contract, and the shop would not be able to insist on the customer being a member. If acceptance had occurred and neither a repair or replacement were possible the customer could also demand a refund, although the refund might be partial.
If the goods do conform to contract then there is no right to a refund at all so the shop can have pretty much any conditions they want. I'm not sure if they could just spring them on the customer out of the blue though. If they advertised a returns policy then they'd have to follow it as advertised. I have no idea whether CeX advertise that returns can only be made to members or not though.0 -
Heya, some insight to why CeX do this.
To their EPOS systems, they can't actually refund someone without a membership card. (Their system requires it).
However, if you don't actually want one you can request for them to cancel it / close it as soon as the refund has been processed.0 -
The requirements of their internal system wouldn't be an excuse in situations where someone had a legal entitlement to a refund. I can't remember what forms of ID they require, but its conceivable that someone wouldn't have one if the things they require.0

I've had a refund for a faulty item from Cex; I do have membership, but I got a refund, not credit. I took it to one shop and got the refund at another (just the towns I happened to go to on consecutive weekends).0

I didn't have to. I bought a Kindle which was stolen goods (then sold on by CEX) and they gave me the money back, in cash, straight away.0 -
That may well have been to avoid any problems with the police, for having handled stolen goods. If they'd been @rsey about refunding you may well have involved the police.0

I threatened too, to be honest. I tweeted them also and they asked me to delete it!0
