what to put over landscape fabric and quality of bark

I would choose bark chips. Will provide a home to small insects which in turn provide a source of food for birds, etc.
Ask a local nurseries. Where I used to live you could bag your own for 70p bag (bring your own big bags) There were mountains of the stuff dropped of by local tradesmen who chipped trees and branches. I could walk round and get the type I needed. Fine or course, soft or hard, etc. After Christmas was best - Christmas trees with a lovely pine smell. I used it for hens too
