gas hob and kitchen cupboards

Help! Wren kitchens have told me that there needs to be 100mm gap between the edge of my gas hob and the start of the wall kitchen cupboards. So if I have a 600mm hob, there needs to be an 800mm gap between the cupboards....My builder was not aware of this, as I planned to put in a 600mm extractor with cupboards butting right up to it, and when I spoke to someone at DIY kitchens (which is where I plan to buy from, so need to make sure I order the right dimensions) they had not heard of it either and suggested that Wren made it up! This needs to be right as I'm ordering online. Can anyone help?

even aside from the suacepan handles, surely a bit of work surface either side of the hob makes sense?

as I planned to put in a 600mm extractor with cupboards butting right up to
    it,

AFAIK this is ok as long as the bottom of the units butting up to the hood/extractor are a min of 366mm above it (the hob).

Yep I mean the wall cabinets above the hob, not directly above

I think I've not explained myself v well! I mean the cabinets on the wall, above the hob, I was told they had to be 100mm wide of the hob

If the wall units are any lower than 760 from the worktop then there needs to be a 50mm gap either side, if they are 760 or above then no gap is needed.

    Have a look here http://www.kbsa.org.uk/kitchen/faqs/kitchen_faqs#9

This explains it better than I can, but ultimately depends on the hob manufacturer - there is a set distance away from combustible material, such as wall cabinets.

As you will see from the diagram above in the FAQ, there is a set of dimensions that has to be provided by the hob manufacturer that will resolve this for you. If you know the model reference, the info will be in the installer's manual.
