Banning from retails stores

Options
I've not been banned from a retail store!

But, I have a question never-the-less.

It seems ASDA bans people for life from a particular store, if they think someone has attempted to steal from a particular store. But they would not be banned from any other ASDA store.

Is there something illegal about banning someone for life from a particular store? Thanks.

It is there decision as to who can and cannot enter a store or all of stores the actual Company owns and nothing illegal, You may see a sign on places saying right to refuse entry and so on.

Nothing at all. Why do you think there may be ?
It's private property and the company can remove the right of entry to anyone they want to (obv. caveats apply re anti-discrimination etc).

I think if you asked every retail manager in the UK if they'd like to see ANY shoplifter banned for life from every store in their chain the vast majority would say yes. If the question was ban ANY shoplifter from ALL stores period I'd say there would still be a majority who would be in favour of such a punishment!

But as private property, any store has the right to refuse admission to anyone they chose provided it's not discriminatory against protected characteristics. Fortunately, despite many failings of the criminal justice system, thieving does not qualify as a protected characteristic.

The ASDA owners would probably love to ban all shoplifters from every one of their stores but this is something that just wouldn't be feasible.
There are currently over 500 ASDA stores around the UK and if each one of these only had 20 shoplifters a year that would mean that each store would have to be on the lookout for over 10,000 individuals.
