Npower Bill 5 Months After Leaving Them!

In December 2013 I switched from Npower to Ecotricity. As far as I was concerned all of my bills were paid up to date by direct debit.
On 10/04/14 the sum of £55.51 was taken from my bank account by direct debit by Npower. I cancelled the direct debit via internet banking and the payment of £55.51 mysteriously disappeared.
The week before last I received a Reminder from Npower for the £55.51 stating that I had received an invoice for this amount. I wrote to them and disputed the money they claim is due and informed them that I had never received an invoice for this.
At the end of last week I got the Final Reminder for £55.51.
Can Npower legally claim money from me 5 months after I have left them and without an invoice?

Yes they can claim the money (if you owe it), but I would make sure you get the invoice and check that whatever meter reading they used as a closing meter reading is the same as the opening meter reading that Ecotricity used and that it was correct.0
