MS Office is a commercial program, it's never free.
For all purposes but macros, Libre Office will do exactly the same job, and can be set to save files in .xlsx formatsNo free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Or you could try Office online, looks the same but runs in your browser. I think you get most of the functionality even with the free version.
I can't post links but google Office Online.
Or just get used to Libre Office as the previous poster said. I know no way or getting a free copy.0 -
Whilst I'm sure Office Online will do what you want (for free) another Microsoft option is Office 2010 starter. This is a limited functionality Word and Excel (with ads). May be a pain to install too.

I give in and bought it for my mum when she was doing a computer course, as she wanted to use the same version she had in class.
you can possibly get it for £8.95 if either of you work for a company with a home use agreement
