When to switch? EON to EDF

I hope someone can help. Mum's currently on the EON Energy Discount V1 which ends on the 30th June 2014 (exit fees of £5 per fuel apply - she has dual fuel). Then she reverts to the EON energy plan (standard variable tariff). After using Cheap Energy Club comparisons, she's decided to switch to EDF Blue +Price Promise August 2015. But when should she start the switch to minimise the amount of time on the EON std variable, and to avoid the exit fees from the EON Discount V1 tariff? Anyone have any ideas how long the switch takes?

Eon should send you information alerting the end of the tariff 42 to 49 days beforehand - so your mother should have received it by tomorrow. Regardless she should be safe applying tomorrow (Monday) or perhaps Tuesday (to add an extra inclusive day).

Note that this 42 day rule is a new one - so you will have to check once you have switched and received a final bill that no charges have been levied - computer systems may not all be updated. (But do not let that stop you.)

It is even possible (though not obligatory) that the current tariff prices will continue past the end date if the switch takes longer.

Switches take seven days plus four to six weeks, unfortunately, and each fuel may have a separate changeover date.

I would make the switch now (today) as it normally takes 4 to 6 weeks to switch, also the EDF August 2015 tariff is very competitively priced and has been around now for about 3 weeks and is time limited.

Yes, she's had the info relating to the end of tariff. So what's this 42 day rule - and where has it come from??

Edit - found it! From OFGEM "Between this notification period and the end of the fixed term contract, suppliers will be banned from charging a termination fee should the customer decide to switch." Excellent :j Thanks to you both :T
