I have a couple of VHS tapes which I want to transfer onto DVD
What is the best way of going about this?
I've seen this dvd recorder I was thinking of purchasing to do this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Toshiba-DVR20-Digital-Recorder-Freeview/dp/B003LO2RIU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1400450997&sr=8-1&keywords=dvd+recorder
What type of dvd's will I need?
Looking at these:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Verbatim-43548-16x-DVD-R-Spindle/dp/B0009U6V90/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1400451202&sr=8-5&keywords=verbatim
These can only record upto 120mins
The VHS videos I have are some are nearly 4 hours long. I would prefer not to put one tape on several disks.
What is the best way to get one video tape to one dvd.
Thanks

I had the same problem a few years ago, it is a bad move to transfer the VHS onto a dvd, because these may not always work on different format. If you have a VHS player then you need a converter (costs around £25ish, ) and transfer your VHS videos onto your pc, from there you can transfer or play it in any format.

that's £100 for each tape.
If you have access to or can buy a cheap vhs player, there are many usb devices that can digitise video.

All assuming the tapes aren't macrovision copy protected
Cramming too much video onto one single layer dvd reduces the quality, not that vhs is particularly good in the first place.!!

If you've only got a few tapes try these guys http://www.video2dvdtransfers.co.uk/0

How many, precisely, do you want (or need) to transfer?0

Sorry to be clear I need to transfer 7 tapes in total.
They are all wedding films from the year 2000 one of the tapes is over 4 hrs long. Will this fit on a dual layer disk?
Thanks for the link above but to be honest I don't quite fancy sending them away to somebody as they are quite precious and can't afford for them to get lost.
I haven't got a separate VHS player only a small tv/VCR combie.
Will the adapter work with this? Also do Amazon sell this adapter?0 -
There are companies out there that will do this for you, probably more cost effective to buying the system to do this.
I know a company in North Yorkshire that do it called KTV based in Harrogate0 -
if your tv/combo doesn't have video out, there are loads of cheap second hand vcr's on ebay, and in charity shops.
amazon sells most things, including usb converters.!!

Which part of the country are you in?0 -
Make sure that you check the tapes to ensure they have not deteriorated in all the years.
Having it done professionally would be best idea IMO because cheap hardware will not make a good job of transferring old VHS tapes which need all the stabilization and correction possible to give a decent result.
I suggest that you either take them to the place personally or send them via a reliable courier which is trackable and can insure for a large amount. Say they are priceless.
Any old VHS and some cheap USB video recorder is not good enough IMO.0 -
I bought one of these http://www.ionaudio.co.uk/video2pc-refurbished.html from Currys for £9.99 and it has worked really well.
The quality of the original videos weren't very good to start with so I wasn't expecting too much. The end result was far far better than I had imagined.
It comes with software to edit.
I haven't put the videos onto dvd so don't know how quick that is. I have kept mine on memory sticks and uploaded to the internet to share that way.
