in Credit cards
Hi
Im hoping somebody can give me some advice...I got a credit card from Capital one several weeks ago, activated and used it to withdraw money, this money was for currency for a holiday, The next day I received a text from Capital one asking me to confirm the transaction by text which I did...I tried to get into my online account and it came up with a message asking me to phone them.
I rang Capital one and was held online for ages, the line was very poor and I couldn't make them understand me... I hung up and tried again to no avail, it was left like that and I went on holiday for 3 weeks, came back to a letter from them, dated the day after the transactioin....it read that they had received information which may suggest somebody has used my personal details to impersonate me and because of the informatineed me to contact them to confirm I opened the account and used it and if they don't hear from m after 28 days from the letter they will close the account and I will be liable for any balance on it and will not amend data on my credit file...
Can anybody advise me on this? Quite frankly ive had nothing but trouble so far from them that they can stick their credit card and ive also forked out enough money trying to get some answers...of course im happy to pay the money back but how can I do this without any statement?
Thanks in advance.

As far as they're concerned, it looks like someone has got a credit card in your name and then taken as much cash out as they can straight away and run off. They weren't satisfied that it was you from the text, as someone stealing your identity could have put their own phone number down.
You will have to phone them up and explain that it was you, but you went on holiday etc. You'll be able to pay them back over the phone.Credit 'Score' - Don't buy the credit 'score' that Experian, Equifax and Noddle want to sell you. It's an arbitrary number that means nothing when it comes to applying for credit.
ALWAYS HAVE A DIRECT DEBIT SET UP FOR THE MINIMUM PAYMENT ON YOUR CREDIT CARDS, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER YOU PLAN TO LOGIN AND PAY EACH MONTH.0 -

Thank you....I realise now it wasnt a wise decision...the 28 days is up, if they have closed the account, what will happen next?0

They want to close the account and want you to pay the balance.
You want to close the account and pay the balance.
Seems win-win to me.
The info on the credit file they mention is the legitimate borrowing that you made and any record of outstanding balance and late payments. You haven't claimed that these are wrong so nothing to do.
It seems you haven't contacted them after receiving the letter - why on earth not? Have you paid the monthly amount they've asked for?
(Do you realise that every day that you leave the balance outstanding you are being charged a high rate of interest, and if you haven't paid the minimum amount each month you will incur late-payment fees and black marks on your credit record?)loose does not rhyme with choose but lose does and is the word you meant to write.0 -
A lot of banks have been hit recently with fraudulent credit card applications impersonating other people.
They were trying to protect you.
Phone them and straighten this out and make sure that they haven't place a cat 1/2 cifas marker too.The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.Bertrand Russell0
