Con: Tesco travel tokens + stena

Today I tried to book a trip form Fishguard to Rosslare with Stenaline.
I had £90 of Tesco clubcard travel tokens. As you get a discount for booking online, I poceeded to book the outward journey on the telephone using my tokens, and the return leg of the journey online.
The cost of the ticket I wished to purchase was £125 on the stena website.
When I tried to book the same ticket on the telephone, the price came to £191.
Thus my £90 of travel tokens were in fact only going to save me £24.
Is this legal? I have written to Stena and Tesco to complain.
Anything else I can do? This appears to be a con.

If it says "can't be combined with any other offer or discount" and the £125 fare includes a discount or some sort of advanced or online booking rate then it's probably very legal.
You could probably ask Tesco to take their vouchers back and re credit your Clubcard account allowing you to use them for something else.
Many discount schemes involve a start price that's padded up to a point that few people are prepared to pay but allows the retailer to imply big savings that are in part savings and in part padding for effective marketing.0 -
I agree they are often a bit of a con. Nothing like 4x face value when you have to pay the padded price. That said, there are some good deals to be had; I find they 'pay in full with vouchers' ones to be best.0

I use mine to book the tunnel.
First I check times prices and availability online.
Then as you can only use the vouchers on telephone bookings I call, usually with web page still open
Have always got the same crossings and price via the telephone as it appears online.
So not all pad the prices!!!0
