Hi, our luggage was mishandled on our return journey and we have now been told it is irretrievably lost. We put in a claim with our travel insurance company but they are refusing to pay as we cannot provide receipts for items in suitcases. Can they do this? The airline have provided a letter stating that the 2 cases are lost.

What does the policy say? How much are you claiming?
If you're claiming for a few bits of old clothing then I'd expect them to pay up with no requirements for receipts.
If you're after a new iPad or a Gucci jacket then it seems reasonable for them to verify the missing object existed in the first place.0 -
Have you tried claiming from the airline rather than your travel insurance?0
