Hi

I realise this has probably been asked 1000's of times but does anyone have a natural way of ridding your garden of greenfly that actually works?

I dont want to use chemicals anymore so been trying to find alternatives to the most common problems in my garden this year.

I've tried searching the internet but keep getting american sites so thought I would see if any of you experienced gardeners could help!

Thank you!

  • I had heard that water with washing up liquid killed them but it had no effect on mine so I have had to buy chemicals today and some marigolds to plants close by as apparently the greenfly and black fly don't like the smell of it. Not sure it will work but thought it worth giving it a go.

I used some soap nut liquid last year and it seemed to have a decent effect. I think you can get samples of soap nuts where you just pay P&P from a website that sells them, can't remember the site but I'm sure Google knows! You just boil the soap nuts in water until the water is brown, then repeat until they no longer colour the water. Works as laundry detergent too :)

I've hung fatballs in the shrubs like viburnham that seem to get a lot of blackfly and roses which act like a magnet for greenfly in my garden. The idea being that visiting birds will help themselves to the pests whilst waiting their turn at the fatball. I hung them above hostas last year and I think that it helped to reduce slugs. Worth a try?
