why are .co domain names so expensive ?

I have a domain name, ending with .co (the .com and .co.uk versions were not available)

It is now due for renewal but it's £25 per year (plus VAT) ... the .com version would only be about £10 plus VAT.

Why are these .co names so expensive ... is it worth keeping

This mis-use of TLDs is a sure sign of silliness. There are lots of reasons why Birmingham's "Thanktank" is a poor shadow of the museum it replaced, but its decision to buy an Ascension Island domainname ("thinktank.ac") because it looks a bit like a university was particularly witness. ".co" just looks like a mis-print for ".com", and if I saw a company using that I'd move on to the next possibility as they're being rather silly.

The worst is that the official feed for video coverage of parliamentary business is parliamentlive.tv.
