Are my tomato plants too small? (pic)

Hi

I'm a bit worried about my toms this year. They look too small to me. Just potted them up yesterday. Here they are:

They look OK., not drawn and hungry. :)

It just depends when you start them and what variety they are.

My lunatic Russian short season ones have fruit on them, while some experimentals I planted last month look just like yours. They all get there in the end....well, mostly!

    Look great to me.

Bit of warm weather like were getting now especially in the greenhouse and they'll shoot up.

Thanks for the reassurance. They got a bit stressed when I put them in a plastic greenhouse too soon so I got worried they may not catch up. I started a bit late too.

I agree they look fine, but I'd leave them under glass for another couple of week'ish - I would plant them out when they're about 8-10" tall, potting them up to a larger pot - would help.

For the sake of curiousity which varieties are you growing?

Thie year I'm growing gardeners delight, Tigerella, sungold (yellow one), Ailsa Craig and moneymaker.

If you grow 'Floridity' you may not bother with any other small main crop tomato afterwards.

Yes, I know, 32p a seed, but I'm trying F2s grown from last year's crop with the aim of selling them in the village next year, instead of the same old GD.

Mind you, if that doesn't work, I'd pay a lot more than 32p for personal use.

    Hello.

At 32p per seed how are growing them?

Specialized seed compost and so on?

Oh no, just normal stuff + a bit of vermiculite + sand till I get to final bag. I grow the mature plants in very large polythene bag pots, which sit well on the polytunnel floor.

The final bag will be well rotted manure at the bottom, and the rest filled with a mix of B&Q compost + Cornish grit + Osmocote granules. Then I feed once a week with comfrey water, rather than pay Mr Tomorite..

Ordinary compost is fine, so long as feeding isn't neglected. I just have a lot of manure about the place! :rotfl:

As tomatoes don't cross easily, I just want to know if seedlings from Floridity F1s will taste as good, or almost as good, and grow fairly uniformly/tidily. Then, I'd be able to afford sharing these with local people/friends.

We'll see. I have some very fast toms that arrive at least 3 weeks ahead of any others, but I don't share those because their growth habit is awful and people complain!
