Is my insulation in flat normal?

I have a flat that is about 30 years old rented, it has nice double glazing but the problem with heat I think in part is due to a hole in wall for the gas vent which has no filter.

Anyway even in the nice weather in the last week its cold indoors to the point that if I turn on electric heaters in my living room., bedroom and bathroom for 1-2 hours a day it becomes so hot it lasts all day yet when its not on at all its cold.

Just wondered if this is normal or the ventilation in the property is letting out the natural heat rather than anything else.

  • A bit of natural ventilation is a good thing, fresh air is healthy (unless you have really bad hayfever :) )

If it's cool inside when it's warm outside and when you put the heaters on the heat is retained for a long time, then it sounds more like you have good insulation. Good insulation will keep the warmth in in winter, but keep the warmth out in summer, leaving you warm when it's cold out and cool when it's warm out.

Well in summer time I have to open up every window and still have to use fans in every room as its too hot so the retention is too good really in that sense its just the vent seems to mess up the balance.

I have gas heating but I never use it even in winter as the initial burst of heating costs around £2 or more for first hour then settles to like 30/40p a hour for flat after that yet I can run 3x heaters which cost about 50p a hour to run for 2-3 hours a day and have flat hot whole day even in winter.

And my kitchen is so small that even in winter with no heating on in house all day putting the oven on means I have to open kitchen window due to the heat.

Yes, unfortunately the downside to good insulation is that when it's really hot in summer, the sunlight that enters through the windows (the glazing) heats the air which then can't escape through the walls. The insulation only really keeps the property cool when it is mildly warm out and/or the curtains are kept shut.
