Thomas Cook Problems?

Please be aware of what has happened to us. We booked a summer holiday in Jan with Thomas Cook. Paid the balance IN FULL at the end of April and then 10 days later got a letter stating the hotel was over booked and they were moving us. They want to move us to a worse hotel and have only offered us £200 back. Its a con. They will not move nor negotiate.

Basically its their "business decision" that a 4* (the level we booked) and a 3* (what we have been offered) are the SAME? They will not accept that prices are higher now and are financially disadvantaging by asking us to find another holiday at May prices. Please pass our story on. The press is full of stories about how Thomas Cook is turning itself around. It seems that they are turning themselves around by overbooking and disadvantaging their customers. We certainly will never book with them again.

Please google about star ratings - they are dependent on who gives them.

I've never had an issue with it personally, and if you have taken out adequate travel insurance, you may be able to claim on it for this; you would need to contact them regarding it.

You also would have ticked a box when booking with TC that stated that you had insurance from when you booked the holiday (before we go down the "I don't have insurance route".

    why would insurance be relevant

If the OP wanted their money back they could just ask for a refund

I know the Op hasnt said that, but they should be able to get a refund or accept the alternative and save £200

some T&Cs won't accept a refund of the full price, as alternatives have been offered; the insurance may cover the tour operator being unable to fulfil the contract as such in that the accommodation has been changed - that would be very circumstantial but a possibility.

It would be the OP cancelling, and this close to the holiday they may forfeit the whole cost of the holiday.

DIY and save the hassle....I appreciate that it's too late in this case, but I cannot recall reading of someone who booked direct being told that the hotel is oversold and either they are being moved or their money is being refunded...it seems it's always the package holidays that happens with.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?
