Debenhams/New Day

Hi,
this is just a word of warning for anyone who has a Debenham's card or another that is paid to NewDay. I know a while back there was some talk about NewDay taking over the finances from Santander and others. I had a direct debit set up for my account to take the balance and received a letter to say the details would just be transferred and not to worry.
Last month I received my statement from Debenhams with an outstanding debit of £215 for some items I had ordered online. However, there was a mix up and the items were never delivered. No problem as I rang deliveries and they emailed to confirm my account had been credited.
However, today I received my bank statement and NewDay had debited the £215! I called them and they told me that was the outstanding amount on my account! When I said it had been refunded, they said refunds did not count as a payment and that was the amount outstanding on my April statement! In addition, they agreed to refund by cheque, they do not refund direct into your account AND I was told they would only refund if requested; it is not an automatic proceedure!
I have cancelled my direct debit. I asked for a letter confirming the cancellation and was told they couldn't do it!
My advice to anyone who has a direct debit set up with NewDay is to cancel it immediately!
