Deferred a final year exam to August - still a student for council tax purposes?

Hi,

Unfortunately due to some health problems I've had to defer my final exam until August, and so I will be graduating in the winter. :( If I hadn't deferred, student status would have expired in early June, at the end of the exam period.

Does anyone know if having deferred means that I will still count as a full time student for council tax purposes? I suspect the answer is going to be no, but don't ask don't get ;) If it makes any difference, I will be working full time from mid-July.

Are you still a full time registered student with the university during this period ?
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

I am not 100% sure myself as the rules are stupid, I was told that I owe full council tax for a property I lived in over summer(non student accommodation) because of illness I didnt go onto the 2nd year or redo the first year, I was even told if I matriculated for the 2nd year and left same day that would mean I was still a student to that date therefore I would get CT exemption to that period.

So I was not entitled to benefits or exemption so had to pay hundreds back in council tax which they are leeching from my benefits at £10 a week despite only getting £70 a week and topping up my rent by £30 a week as is and other "overpayments" come to £17 a week meaning I struggle to make ends meet.

Sorry if that comes off as off topic a little but your situation is a little different since you are doing an exam in August in theory that should cover you as I had my last exam in April so I had to pay CT from April onwards as when they asked me when I "left" I said I had my last exam in April even though the year didnt end till June.

It really depends on how your deferral has been processed by your university.

If you ask your university directly, they should be able to tell you. They will have some "official" policy on the issue so should be able to give you a direct answer.

The easiest way to get your answer is to speak to the Student Administration team there, or the Student Advice Centre in the SU. You haven't graduated yet but you are not attending anymore teaching so I don't think you will be exempt from CT anymore.
