Tax a car with no V5C or V11 reminder.

I've just purchased a car which has no tax. I have my portion fo the V5C but obviously not the full document as I only purchased it yesterday so I assume it'll take a while to come. As I don't have the V5C nor the reminder letter I cannot renew tax online.

A friend told me that I can take documents into the post office (MOT cert, my portion of the V5 and my insurance doc). I have all of these, but I can't find any info regarding being able to do this... before I make the trek to the post office I thought I'd ask here. Is this possible?

If this isn't possible, are there other ways? Or do I genuinely have to wait for what could be over a week before I can drive my car?

Yes you can get it at a post office (that issues tax discs)

(No need for your insurance cert)

You can tax it at a tax disc issuing post office with just the new keepers slip. Just make sure you write your name and address on it if the seller hasn't already done so.

I taxed my latest car with just the new keepers slip last March. You no longer need to show insurance or MOT certificates at the post office anymore.

If the car needs an MOT then you have to show a cert at the post office that is valid on the day the tax is to start

Nope, I taxed my car at PO on 31th March with *just* the new keepers slip. All other documents were left at home.

I thought you still needed to show a MOT (if the vehicle needs one) at the Post Office.

Presumably because your vehicle was not old enough to need an MOT or was MOT-exempt (or the PO clerk was in error).

The PO clerk being in error would not surprise me - some of them are so dopey/dosy as to not know whether it's Tuesday or Norway.

My car is over 12 years old so yes it does require an MOT, but you are now not required to show one at the PO.

Maybe the PO website hasn't been updated.
