Dog looks to have ringworm

Really having a week of it..

Noticed at breakfast there was as "wet patch" on my dog and went to have look, got the TCP out expecting it to just be a cut or something, but it was a very odd largish patch of bald skin. I knew it was likely ringworm, have called the vets and he's booked in for later today, and I've changed all his bedding, and bleached the floors etc. I've done a lot of reading up on it but can't seem to get an answer to this question. Should I quarantine my dog? I read it very contagious, but my lab will go a bit stir crazy stuck inside all day so obviously don't want to if its not needed!

I think you need to be more careful about him passing it on to you than about him being out and about, if it is ringworm. You might want to stop him bouncing around on other dogs just in case, but I wouldn't keep him in. I think the quarantine bit is more about trying to separate from any other pets in the household so they don't get it as well, rather than keeping him away from everything and everyone.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Not had it with dogs but had it with horses. ( there was an outbreak ay a veterinary hospital and one of mine came home with it). I would quarantine I am afraid. If you have more than one dog accept they might all get it. ( we gave our house a 'sacrificial companion' who wasn't completing that year and were prepared to treat both, I wouldn't really want to isolate an animal from companionship. And yes, you need to be careful of you getting it too, and passing it on.

If it was wet, I would wonder if it was ringworm - it tends to be quite dry and scaley. Could it be wet eczema/a hotspot instead?

It's probably a patch of AMD.

You were quite right, it was eczema! Feel very foolish after cleaning the whole house and having 3 showers...

Better safe than sorry, IMO, if it had have been ringworm and you hadn't been vigilant it can be hard to nip in the bud.

Hope your dog is not too uncomfortable.

I would have guessed a hotspot and they can be a nightmare to treat. Glad it isn't anything serious.

I wouldn't feel silly. I caught ringworm off my chinchillas when they had it, and it's not pleasant! They kept passing it between themselves, and I got it twice, so certainly worth taking precautions if you even suspect it could have been ringworm.

Btw one product to look into, I would suggest manuka honey. I use a manuka honey ointment on one of my dogs who tries desperately to turn every nick into a lick granuloma! And it's done wonders on his dry elbows (he loves to lay on laminate and concrete)
