5 year old faulty Samsung TV from Currys

Options
Hi guys,

About five years ago I bought a 50 inch Samsung plasma TV from a from a currys store. A few days ago the screen went blank, the power light comes on but the picture won't. Having Googled the issue it seems I'm not the only person to have this issue with this model.

Anyhow, I dropped into currys tonight to see if there was anything they could do under the SOGA but the guy really didn't want to know and told me to contact head office.

Now, I don't have any proof of purchase but the TV I bought was exclusive to currys if I remember correctly so they should know I bought it from them.

I know there is a six year limit on claiming damages and that an item only had to last a reasonable amount of time which isn't defined.

This leaves me with a number of questions.

1. Do I need a proof of purchase?
2. Is five years a reasonable amount of time for a £1000 TV? I feel it should last longer, especially as this model seems to suffer from this fault a lot.
3. What is the best way to go about pursuing this?

Thanks in advance.

Yes you need proof of purchase and no you have very little hope of a resolution.

After 5 years even if you did happen to get a resolution the tv would only be worth a fraction of the £1000 due to the use you have had, about £150.

But without the POP they wont even look at it for you, you could have got it from freecycle for all they know, just because it was exclusive to them doesn't mean you bought it from them.

No, they really shouldn't. As bris has correctly advised, just because it's an exclusive Curry's model doesn't mean you're the original purchaser. Without any proof of purchase you're really on a hiding to nothing. How did you pay for the TV, do you not have any credit card statement etc?

Also, even with a POP the onus will still be on you to prove the fault is inherent, I'm afraid Google doesn't count as proof.
  • To be honest I've understood Plasma TV's not to last much longer than 5 years anyway and that's the nature of them. I bought one once (sold it 3 years later) but since then reading up on TV's have read plasma's don't last that long.

Not sure where you're getting your information but Plasma TVs can last just as long as any other TV if properly looked after.

Think you are looking at the very old plasmas. Any in the last decade will have an average life of c100,000 viewing hours depending on brand/ model etc. Even leaving it on 24/7 would last longer than 5 years and I suspect most people dont watch that much TV.

Of cause other elements other than the screen can fail long before that

They're right to put you in touch with Head Office. Curry's have an out of warranty team to deal with SoGA transactions to ensure that all treatments are consistent rather than dealt with at a store level.

The best bet is to get in touch with this team. They may be able to track proof of purchase for you and save you the trouble. Don't expect much back though, and they may ask you to get a report showing the fault is inherent before they will do anything.
