Last august I moved into a small 2 bedroom semi with thtc electricity with scottish hydro, gas is not an option. I have one storage heater in the lounge and one in the hall. Over the last 6 months my electric bill has came to £1300.!! Would it be possible to change the meter to economy 7 or something similar. My friend is on the economy tariff and her bill was only 700 for the same time. I have no heating in the bedrooms. The storage heaters are old, would it make any difference changing them?

yes just phone up and they will change it, it really should of been in the property if you have storage heaters. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

Don't compare £s you need to compare kwh because for all you know they are using half of the electricity that you use.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

You'll need a new meter first (which SP will charge you for) and perhaps some internal rewiring which you will need to instruct & pay your own electrician to do.
And then you will probably get a bill larger than you currently pay.0 -
it will make little difference to replace the storage heaters with modern replacements.
Best thing to do first is work out where the electricity is being used.
If it is the storage heaters that are using a high percentage of the energy then you should be on economy 7.
You will need a meter that is compatible with economy seven and possibly some sort of time switch.
If your heating is using a lot of the power then you will save money on economy 7 but you do have to know how to use storage heaters - they are not set and forget.0 -
Think in the replies, some people are not aware that thtc is a rather complex form of Economy 10, so, if it is set up correctly, the storage heaters will be using off-peak electricity.0

Hi - just to be clear, THTC isn't a complex form of one of the Economy tariffs. It is remote switched heating with two seperate meters, the heating and hot water will always be on the cheaper rate (9.something pence) and the rest of the electricity on the higher rate (18. something pence).
There is no off peak, but also you can't control when the storage heaters come off and on (hence 'remote' switched).
You can get the system changed, but it does cost a bit. It is tricky to change suppliers but can be done for some - I have done it in the past and it is definitely worth doing.
It is about the units used and the rates you are on - but with THTC, check your water heating has a timer that you can set - that can be an issue. Hope that helps and if you need more info let me know.
Cheers,

Anyone paying those rates for electricity really needs to see what they can get by using special offers from MSE. The one I'm on at the moment is costing 11.298p per unit for everything with eON."There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0 -

I would alsways urge people to generally consult a comparison site to find the best deal for them.
Trying to compare a unit charge is meaningless as (a) electricity charges vary by region and (b) other charges apply.
Anyway, 9.something pence is less than 11.298p.
Moreover, for those on a legacy tariff such as here, then there is no choice of tariff or supplier - attempting to change invariably ends in tears (unless independent expert electrical advice is sought and followed)
Btw, This thread is 1 year old!0 -
It seems that jammied is an energy thread resurrectionist with a fetish for THTC tariffs
