Back up your data then run chkdsk /r

Bring up a command prompt and type in chkdsk /r this can take a long time if you have a big hard drive, it sorted out my hard drive.

Not sure how you bring up command prompt in Win 8.

When you back up current hard drive, I think you can create an image of it other than cloning. Use a imaging tool that can create image file sector by sector, as your hard drive may have developed bad sectors. By converting a hard drive to image file, you can recover data from it anytime you need.

Save the image file to an external device, such as portable hard drive, flash drive or DVD disks, so if your hard drive crashed, you can still recover from an external source.

back up all your data NOW in case it does completely fail....

    +1 - Absolutely!

Then buy a new hard drive, SSd or SATA. If you buy a new SSD, strip out the old drive first and check the size. Also check out this HP Guide to removing/replacing the drive:

It's for a G6, you don't say which model of Pavilion you have but look up yours on the website. I have a DV7, almost 4 years old and have had no problems with the hard drive. Although mine has an actual HP drive inside, not the Fujitsu which I know has had problems reported.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

+1 for this plan, should mark bad sectors out so they're not used in future.
[Windows Key + X, select "Command Prompt" in windows 8]

But DO back up as per the other suggestions! ASAP!
    Friendly greeting!
