CURRYS won't replace a faulty item

Taxiphil is correct. I am having the same argument with Debenhams at the moment (not over an electrical item but nevertheless they're trying to get us to go for the manufacturer's guarantee rather than our rights under the SoGA). There's a template letter on the Consumer Direct web site - download it, add the specifics, print it, post it recorded delivery and if they don't send you a refund, take them to court.
That's our plan: consumer protection laws are there for a reason. If these companies think they can get away in breach of the law we need to show them otherwise.#145 Save £12k in 2016 Challenge: £12,062.62/£12,000.00 Beginning Balance: £5,027.78 CHALLENGE MET

We bought the DVD recorder with Freeview for our son. He has mild learning difficulties and doesn't understand what is going on. My first priority is to get him a replacement unit ASAP. I am prepared to wait until tomorrow to see how Daewoo will react before I do anything else. I also have a "Cunning Plan" if that fails.
Irrespective of the result, I will be contacting OFT and Trading Standards to pursue this. I agree with you all about the sale of goods act being the way to go, but that is secondary to the welfare of my son. If Daewoo say "Yes" it will provide additional ammunition against Currys. If they say "No" it simply means that Daewoo will be added to the complaint.

If the main issue is your son, simply purchase a new unit and then claim a refund for the original unit using the letters on the consumerdirect web site.

Armed with advice from posters here and a very helpful lady from Consumerdirect.com, I went back to Currys to fight my case under the Sale of Goods Act.
I spent 40 minutes arguing against total intransigence and ignorance until my son heard mention of the word transformer and asked me what had happened to it. I said it wasn't a transformer it was just a plug. The acting manager was gobsmacked and asked me what I meant. I said I cut off a plug and fitted a different one. At that point he apologised profusely and said he had been told I had modified the recorder by cutting off a transformer. He then took the unusual step of looking in the box, and lo, he beheld a plug. He then confirmed his incompetence by opening up the plug with too small a screwdriver, looking inside and asking why there were only two pins connected. "Because there are only two wires" said I. He then tried and failed to put the plug back together again. He even threw the cable clamp in the bin and couldn't understand why the screws wouldn't hold.
Absolute muppetry comes to mind but that is an insult to TV entertainment. Anyway, he then proceeded to give me the refund we should have had yesterday.
I then took my son to Argos where for the same money we bought a Hard Drive recorder with Freeview, an MP3 Player, and still had ₤11 in change. Result, one happy son.
So, thank you to everyone for your help. On Wednesday I am going back to see the manager to discuss compensation for petrol, premium rate 'phone calls, and time.

Glad to hear you got a result.
The people in these places can be such utter morons that I don't even bother wasting my breath on verbal intercourse with them. I just fire off a Letter Before Action to their Head Office, then sue on MCOL if necessary. Never fails.0 -
The sooner WE stop going to Curry's/Comet the better.
Personally, if the deal is right, I ONLY buy from Argos because their follow up service is exceptional.
I had a VCR unit that packed in with only 2 days left of warranty.
Got my money back - no questions asked.0 -

I totally agree with this. Either the policy with currys/comet is deliberate [SIZE=-1]obfuscation with customer problems or the staff training is non existent. One only needs look on this board and the majority of problems are with these retailers and their misunderstanding of the Sale of Goods Act.
