O no OVO

I was told by EDF that I could get £150p.a reduction in my fuel bill if I joined Ovo.I joined Ovo and my bill went up by £36. Ovo don't tell you your monthly DD until after you are in the contract.
The £150 reduction is based on your DD's paid to your former supplier until you join Ovo then they do their own calculations and ignore your previous payments.

Can anyone tell me how they make a calculation without knowing how many people live in the property?

Did you use a comparison site? The usage I entered into the comparison site I used, was then used for the exact amount of monthly payments that Ovo set up. This is actually the first time this has happened, with every other company i've switched to they have set the DD at £20-50 higher per month (and I've always been told after i am in contract), so it's very common - I just ask them to lower it and they do.

You can request from Ovo that they reduce your monthly payments to be the same as you were paying with EDF, but obviously they will need to be raised if you do use more.

Have you checked and compared the kwh prices and standing charges yourself and used your annual usage to calculate the savings? You can either do it yourself or use a comparison site to do it for you if the tariffs are still listed. It's the savings for the kwh prices and standing charges for your usage that matter (and will account for the overall annual £150 saving) not the monthly DD payments as these can change.

You are making the classic mistake of assuming that your initial monthly DD is a twelfth of what you will actually pay over a year. It's not. if you give regular readings your DD will be adjusted to reflect your actual usage. Given accurate kWh input, the comp sites do not lie.
It costs the same to heat a property with one person in it, or ten, everything else being equal.
