  • car of that age engine replacement is doesn't really affect the value IMHO as long as it was of similar or lower miles and had the timing belt and tensioner and water pump and clutch done like whats supposed to be done when fitting an engine because its easily done whilst the engine is out and its history is unknown, when coming from scrappies the oil is drained out, so filter and oil, plugs done jobs a good'un.

The pistons in a zetec and bottom end are pretty strong that's why the zetec 1.8/2.0 is a good bottom end to have as a escort RS turbo conversion CVH to ZVH to counter the old RS bottom end having crank shell issues theyre pretty prone once they go they keep going even when you have them done. I cant see how a simple headgasket blowing could damage them to the point of no return, unless you run with no water in it for a long time resulting in a HG failure and high heat exposure to pistons, warping the head and resulting in complete failure to start due to lacking compression. if the gasket failed the water spooling on the pistons would cool it and protect them, but would hamper compression and if the chamber was full enough of water the conrods would bend before any pistons were damaged but again you would know there was something really really wrong with the engine before that stage.

only thing I think the garage could be referring to is the piston rings maybe fried, or piston bores have scored, that would require a bore honing, oversized pistons, new rings, new connecting rod bearings, and some expensive costs and labor.
