Every analyst expert review of Dixon's prospects I have seen over the last couple of years has been negative. Meanwhile the share price has risen from 10p to 50p :D

  • I am stunned Dixons is still a thing in 2014. How did they survive whilst the likes of Comet fell by the wayside?

Comet only had one brand name wheras Dixons had several. When they had milked the Dixons brand for all it was worth, they switched to the Curry's brand which still had some credibility. Curry's is still the first place many people think of for domestic white goods, which I think is what's made them the last man standing.

Didn't Dixons close down their mobile store "The Link"?

    Now this.

    Odd.

    Odd.

'The Link' went along with most of the other High Street stores, with the stock moved to out of town 'Currys' stores which are more profitable. There are too many shops selling phones, but CW do more than that.

I think that's going to be Dixons' / Currys' problem. Does anyone under the age of 40 shop there? :)

Yep they do - me for one! I bought my galaxy tab 3 there the other day as it was the cheapest I could find (bar a few dodgy looking ebay sellers).

Dixons/Currys/PCWorld do what they do really well - which is extract lots of money for overpriced gadgets and warranties from people who don't know any better.

They have to be competitive on large popular items like widescreen TVs where everyone is selling them. There is much more mark up on the obscure bits and pieces because people are not so likely to compare prices.
For example a digital connecting lead either works or it doesn't. There is virtually no technical difference between a Poundland HDMI lead, and a 'Gold Plated' one costing £100. One will do the job just as well as the other and I defy anyone to tell any difference in picture quality. Anyone who says otherwise either doesn't know what they are talking about or they are trying to sell you an overpriced one.
But look at the price of leads in Poundland compared to Dixons....

How much are they in Poundland?
Q: What kind of discussions aren't allowed?
A: It goes without saying that this site's about MoneySaving.

Q: Why are some Board Guides sometimes unpleasant?
A: We very much hope this isn't the case. But if it is, please make sure you report this, as you would any other forum user's posts, to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com.
